JH Bishop Postgraduate Scholarship

CONDITIONS OF AWARD

General Goal

To attract to the University of New England very able candidates to undertake postgraduate research in Classics and Ancient History.

An acceptable awardee

The candidate must have an outstanding first degree from any university in Greek, Latin, Classics, or Ancient History, and intend to commence or already be pursuing postgraduate research at UNE in any appropriate area.

Eligibility

  1. Preference will be given to internal full-time PhD or MPhil candidates. However, an external or part-time candidate may be considered if in that year no suitable internal full-time applicant emerges
  2. The applicant must be an Australian citizen normally resident in the country
  3. The strong focus on the one or both Classical languages or Ancient History should be  understood to mean that topics in the following areas are acceptable: linguistics, history, philosophy, religion, literature, etc.; whereas art history or archaeology, for example, would be excluded. Note that a candidate in Ancient History must already have a minimum of two years formal study of Latin or Greek (or both) to be eligible to apply.

Value

$5,000 p.a. f/t (current expectation), or pro rata p/t, for up to two years (MPhil Candidates) or 3 years (PhD candidates).  The award is available subject to their being no existing internal incumbent and sufficient funds from the interest in hand. The award is payable each year in two equal installments, the first at the start of the candidature upon proof of enrolled status, the second 6 months later upon recommendation from the Head of School and the Supervisor confirming satisfactory progress.

Caveat

The holder of this Scholarship will be required to repay it if candidature is transferred to another University.

Method of application

Please complete the application form below.  Provide evidence of Australian citizenship; certified copies of degree transcripts; names of two academic referees who should be asked by the candidate to write confidentially to Research Services by the closing date; electronic copies of BA thesis or other evidence of research (published or unpublished).

Note

The successful applicant of the J.H. Bishop Postgraduate Scholarship in Classics & Ancient History must acknowledge it specifically in the thesis and in any other published research or conference papers researched or written during the life of this grant.

Under no circumstances will late applications be considered. Selection of recipients is the responsibility of the Selection Committee whose decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into.
