Writing

Coursework studies in Writing can be undertaken at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

There is a comprehensive range of Writing units available to Internal and External students. This provides valuable flexibility to students, who can vary their mode of study to suit their employment and individual needs.


Undergraduate Writing

Bachelor of Arts (Major in Writing)

Students may take Writing as a major within a Bachelor of Arts.

The Writing Major

Students who wish to major in Writing must undertake:

(a) Both ENCO 100  Communication Skills: Composition (Semester 1, 2008)
and ENCO 102  Introduction to Writing in Genres (Semester 2, 2008);

and

(b) at least 24 credit points (cp) (each unit is worth 6 cp) at 300 level from:

(Please Note: 300 level units are usually offered on a rotating basis once every two years.)

COMM 323   New Media (not offered in 2008)
ECT 303   Research in Writing (not offered in 2008)
ENGL 304  Critical and Creative Writing Through Literature (not offered in 2008)
ENCO 306   Writing for Work: Styles and Contexts (Semester 1, 2008)
ENCO 329   Publishing and Editing (Semester 2, 2008)

plus

(c) at least 6 cp, and not more than 12 cp, from:

COMM 386  Screenwriting (not offered in 2008)
ECTW 300  Research and Professional Practice (Semester 1 or Semester 2, 2008)
ENCO 326   Persuading the Public: Rhetoric and Public Affairs (not offered in 2008)
ENGL 305  The History of the English Language (not offered in 2008)
ENGL 372   Australian Literature: 1930 to the Present (not offered in 2008)
WORK 300  Professional Skills Development * (* if in a field approved for this area of study by the Head of School) (Semester 1 or Semester 2, 2008)
ENCO 308   The Art of Nonfiction (Semester 2, 2008)
ENCO 328   Literature and Journalism (Semester 2, 2008)
THEA 321  Scriptwriting for the Theatre (Semester 2, 2008)

Bachelor of Communication Studies (Program in Writing)

The Bachelor of Communication Studies (three years full time) at UNE offers a balance of academic and vocational education. The named program in Writing allows students to specialize in academic, professional, organizational, creative and media-based genres.

The Writing Program

Students who wish to undertake the Writing program in the Bachelor of Communications require:

Postgraduate Writing

There are many opportunities for postgraduate study in the English, Communication Studies and Theatre Studies including the Master of Arts by Coursework, Master of Arts by Dissertation and the Doctor of Philosophy, as well as a number of Graduate Certificates.
