Background
The Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) provides strategic leadership for all aspects of the University’s research activities and oversight of the University’s Research Management Plan.
The portfolio responsibility of the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) includes a broad range of research support services for staff and postgraduate higher degree research students. The portfolio also includes responsibility for relationships with Cooperative Research Centres, various UNE Research Centres and Institutes and for intellectual property and commercialisation matters. Ray is acting in the role of Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) until the position is permanently filled.
Ray holds a PhD in Psychology and has held positions in the disciplines of Education, Psychology and Business/Management - a diverse set of experiences that informs his research. His research is focused mainly in the areas of decision making and cognition, chaos and complexity theory organisational and behavioural systems theory, cause mapping and multivariate statistics. He has also worked on more diverse research projects such as multivariate analyses of criminal psychological profiling data and analysing teacher judgments when making student assessments. He has consulted with several Australian and US-based industries and government departments in areas such as ergonomics, performance measurement, survey design and analysis, and change management. Ray has published two books, Judgment Analysis: Theory, Methods and Applications (Academic Press, 1996) and Illustrating Statistical Procedures: For Business, Behavioural and Social Sciences (Tilde University Press, 2007). He is currently completing his third book, Surviving and Thriving in Postgraduate Business Research (Tilde University Press, forthcoming), co-authored with Professor Gael McDonald (Deakin University). He has published 10 book chapters, over 50 articles in national and international refereed journals and has been a chief investigator on several ARC grants.
He has supervised a number of PhDs, masters and honours students over the years in areas such as: leadership, data mining methods, computerised adaptive testing in classrooms, community attitudes toward police, organisational commitment and culture, complexity perspectives on organisational processes and policy implementation, brand equity and consumer involvement models, consumer perspectives on purchasing organic foods, organisational decision making and managerial intuition, vocational interests, hazard perceptions on farms, chaos models of work performance, e-commerce strategies in small business, and adoption of agricultural innovations.
Ray is a former President of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management (ANZAM) and is currently the editor of ANZAM’s journal, the Journal of Management & Organization.
