Professor Margaret Sedgley

Margaret Sedgley holds an undergraduate degree in Agricultural Botany from the University of Leeds and a PhD in Botany from the University of St Andrews. She was a Research Scientist with the CSIRO for eleven years, leading programmes addressing the breeding systems of a range of crop species. She joined the University of Adelaide in 1985 and held positions including Head of the Department of Horticulture, Viticulture and Oenology and Dean of Graduate Studies. In addition to University positions she lead the cross-university Regional Facility in Microscopy and Microanalysis and served on a range of Boards including the Australian Wine Research Institute, South Australian Primary Industries Research and Development, South Australian Museum and Cooperative Research Centre for Viticulture.
She has also served on a range of Australian Research Council Committees, the Plant Breeders Rights Advisory Committee and the South Australian Development Council.

Professor Sedgley joined the University of New England in 2005 as Executive Dean of the Faculty of The Sciences. She became Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the Faculty of The Sciences and Pro Vice-Chancellor and Acting Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences in January 2007, prior to her current apppointment in July 2007. While at UNE she has served on the Boards of the Australian Sheep Industry Cooperative Research Centre and the National Marine Science Centre.

Professor Sedgley has published over 200 papers in refereed journals, has supervised more than 40 postgraduate research students and has attracted more than $10 million in external grant funding over the last ten years from a range of government, industry and community sources.
