Mission Statement:


This is a cross-disciplinary research grouping focused on the cultural aspects of sexuality. It aims to foster intellectual exchange and research project activity between academics and professional individuals/institutions within and across regional and urban Australia. The group is particularly interested in developing ‘interpretive’ accounts of human sexuality informed by work in the humanities and social sciences. A key directive of the group is the improvement of community equity and inclusivity through a greater appreciation of sexual diversity. The research interests of the group include: historical approaches and historical accounts of sexuality, theories of gender and sexuality, psychoanalytical approaches to sexuality, reproductive health, sexuality in popular culture and sex work.

Aims of the Centre

  • Facilitate and undertake multidisciplinary research into social, cultural and historical aspects of human sexual behaviour.
  • Provide a focus for collaborative research development at UNE.
  • Develop research links and focus resources at a community and institutional level. The group seeks to make links with researchers throughout Australia, particularly those working outside of metropolitan centres.
  • Provide a pedagogical home for students wishing to pursue post-graduate work in the field of human sexuality.
  • Facilitate a greater appreciation of sexual diversity through a broad dissemination of research outcomes which will improve knowledge and skills and inform policy.
