Using Technology Comprehensive ICDL The International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL) is internationally recognised (in over 135 countries) as the global benchmark for end-user computer skills and is the leading certification adopted by governments, international organisations and corporations alike. The University of New England provides free access to the course material online for every student and staff member wishing to gain these vital skills. Students and staff can also receive the ICDL accreditation for a small charge. Modules in the ICDL are: Module 1: Basic Concepts of IT The physical make-up of a personal computer and concepts such as data storage and memory. Module 2: Using the Computer and Managing Files The fundamental functions of a personal computer and its operation system. Module 3: Word Processing (ICDL ) Creating, formatting and finishing a word-processing document, and using more advanced word-processing features. Module 4: Spreadsheets Developing, formatting and using a spreadsheet; using basic formulas and functions to perform standard mathematical and logical functions. Module 5: Databases Designing and planning a simple database using a standard database package; retrieving information from an existing database. Module 6: Presentations Creating, formatting and preparing presentations, using graphics and charts and various slide show effects. Module 7: Information and Communication (Internet and Email) Using a Web browser application and available search engine tools to accomplish Web search tasks; using E-mail software to send, receive and organise messages. The ICDL is jointly provided by the Organisational Development Unit (ODU) and the Academic Skills Office. Wordprocessing The most common software for wordprocessing is Microsoft Word, which is installed in many computer labs across campus. An introductory handout can be downloaded here. More comprehensive training is available online. Three levels of self-paced online Word training (Foundation , Intermediate and Advanced) are offered by ODU. A module on wordprocessing is also included in the International Computer Driving Licence. Spreadsheets The most common software for spreadsheets is Microsoft Excel, which is installed in many computer labs across campus. Comprehensive Excel training is available online. Three levels of self-paced online Excel training (Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced) are offered by ODU. A module on spreadsheets is also included in the International Computer Driving Licence. EndNote EndNote is a software package that is used by many lecturers and students for referencing their research work. EndNote classes are run regularly in the Library. Online documentation is also available from UNE’s Endnote site. Web Publishing Every user with a UNE account has sufficient space to create their own Web page. Comprehensive self-paced online courses are available for the Dreamweaver Web page-editing software through ODU. Databases Comprehensive training in MS Access is available online through ODU. Outlook Outlook is a professional email program which also performs a wide range of "organiser" functions such as a diary, task scheduler and address book. Comprehensive training in Outlook is available online through ODU. Adobe Illustrator Adobe Illustrator is a professional graphics program that is capable of processing digital images or developing original graphic works. Three levels of self-paced online Illustrator training are offered by ODU. Adobe Photoshop With Photoshop you can manipulate images and retouch photos. You can also use Photoshop to create original art from scratch. The ODU offers online training in Photoshop. PowerPoint PowerPoint is the presentation graphics program in Microsoft Office. Users can create eye-catching slides, handouts, outlines, and notes to deliver an impressive presentation.Three levels of self-paced online PowerPoint training (Foundation and Intermediate and Advanced ) are offered by ODU. Project Microsoft Project is a powerful software package for collating, analysing and presenting project management information suach as task breakdowns, resourcing ,and scheduling. Publisher Publisher 2003 is a template-based desktop prublishing program that can be used to quickly create dynamic and impressive flyers, documents, business cards etc..
