Strategic Advisory Committee
Roles and responsibilities
The Minister for Tertiary Education has appointed a Strategic Advisory Committee. The Strategic Advisory Committee will provide advice to the Minister to help to shape the strategic directions of the Office for Learning and Teaching and to set priorities for the grants and fellowship schemes.
The Strategic Advisory Committee members are:
- Professor Margaret Gardner AO (Chair) - Vice-Chancellor, RMIT University
- Professor Jane den Hollander - Vice-Chancellor, Deakin University
- Professor Deborah Terry - Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, The University of Queensland
- Professor David Sadler - Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Students and Education) University of Tasmania
- Professor Judyth Sachs - Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost, Macquarie University
- Professor Tim Brailsford - Vice-Chancellor and President, Bond University
- Professor Steve Larkin - Pro Vice-Chancellor Indigenous Leadership, Charles Darwin University
- Donherra Walmsley - National President, National Union of Students
- Jeannie Rea - National President, National Tertiary Education Union
The Strategic Advisory Committee will make recommendations to the Minister for the awarding of Grants and Awards, based on the recommendations of the respective Grants programs and Australian Awards for University Teaching (AAUT) Standing Committees.
Office for Teaching and Learning (OLT) On 16 November 2011, Senator the Hon Chris Evans, Minister for Tertiary Education, announced the establishment of the Office for Learning and Teaching (OLT) to support learning and teaching in higher education. The Office for Teaching and Learning sits with the Minister for Tertiary Education within the Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education.. The OLT is responsible for: receipt and collation of grant applications, selection of assessors, secretariat support for Grants and Awards committees, and preparation of information and application instructions.
Assessors are selected by the OLT and will assess all applications against relevant information and selection criteria for each Grants program. The OLT maintains a register of assessors, who have been specifically nominated by the institutions, or have received citations or awards, or are ALTC Fellows, Discipline Scholars, project leaders or team members, or senior, retired academics. OLT staff take into account discipline expertise, learning and teaching expertise, experience assessing applications or nominations, and the potential professional development for the individuals and benefit to their institution provided by their participation in the assessment exercise.
Standing Committee on Australian Awards for University Teaching
Grants programs Standing Committees: the relevant Standing Committee will consider applications and assessors’ advice against the instructions and selection criteria and make recommendations to the Strategic Advisory Committee.
The Minister will make the final decision on all grant recipients based on advice form the Strategic Advisory Committee. The minister will retain the discretion not to award grants.
