e-Submission will continue to be used for assignments for units in Blackboard. For Blackboard units please refer to the following instructions or Download the e-submission for Blackboard Units instructional manual as a PDF (3.4mb). Some assignments are not suitable for submission electronically and may be submitted in hardcopy.

The ‘e-Submission’ link will first take you to the e-Submission page which provides additional information.
Click the ‘Log in to e-Submission’ button which will open the Dashboard page.
There are a number of options on this page. The ‘My assignments’ link will take you to the Assignment list page which provides a summary of your units and the assignments required for each unit.
Assignment information
The assignment list page will look like this.
e-Submitting an assignment
To view details of an assignment ( i.e. accepted file type ) or e-submit an assignment click on the ‘Submit this assignment ‘ button.
This will bring up a page explaining the e-Submission process. The page is broken into five sections.
Section 1
Section 2
Section 3
If in the assignment summary the required file type is PDF, you will need to convert your document before submitting. Step 2 provides an explanation on how to convert a document to PDF on a Mac and also provides access to PDF conversion software if you are using a PC.
Section 4
The first part of this section is the UNE Plagiarism declaration. The second part has information about multiple files. At present only one file can be submitted for each assignment. You must join your documents together and convert to PDF before you submit your assignment. For example, if you have five Word documents you will need to merge these into one Word document and convert to PDF or if you have a Powerpoint which has been converted to PDF and another Word document, you will need to convert the Word document to PDF and merge the two PDFs into one. The IT service desk provides a service that will merge two PDFs into one free of charge. Contact IT on 6773 5000.
Section 5
Once your assignment has been merged into one document and converted to a PDF it can be submitted by completing Step 3: Submit for marking. You will need to attach your file and click ‘Submit your assignment for marking’ button. When you e-submit your assignment an email receipt is automatically sent to your UNE email address.
Turnitin originality self-check
UNE uses a software application to determine the originality* of assessable work submitted by its students. This software is called Turnitin and is completely integrated into the e-Submission process. Turnitin checks the originality of your work by comparing text from your assignment with other student assignments websites, databases and online journals.
* Originality, in this context, does not mean the assignment needs to be solely original thought. It refers to the use of sources in your work.
Before you submit your assignment for marking you are able to submit it to Turnitin for originality checking. This is an OPTIONAL step but it will allow you to review the originality of your work before final submission. You can self-submit your assignment to Turnitin as many times as you wish until you receive a report you are satisfied with. Reports should be returned in under fifteen minutes however you should allow at least thirty minutes in order to be sure your originality report will be returned before you submit your assignemnt for marking, if you do not see a report in this time refresh your browser.
Note: At this stage your document will NOT be checked against other student submissions but WILL be checked against the public Internet and online journal and databases that Turnitin has access to. When your assignment is submitted for marking it will then be checked against other student submissions.
To check the originality of your work through Turnitin, click on the ‘Check the originality of your work’ button in ‘Step 1’.
Clicking on this button takes you to ‘e-Submission: Check the originality of your work’.
To submit a file to Turnitin for originality checking scroll to the bottom of the page to the section ‘Submit a file for checking’.
Click the browse button and locate on your computer the file you wish to check. Click the ‘Submit a draft of your work for originality checking’ button. A copy of this file will be sent to Turnitin.
Reports typically are returned in under fifteen minutes but allow thirty minutes. To access your reports click on the ‘My Reports’ button.
Clicking this button takes you to the ‘Self-check reports’ page.
The Turnitin originality Report
The Turnitin originality report will appear as a dynamic HTML file. This report will open in a new browser window. There are three major components of the report, the header, the originally submitted file and the originality report.
The header
The header contains information such as the student number or name (depending on the information provided) of the person who submitted the original file, the date and time the file was submitted, a unique file ID, the word count of the original document, and the overall similarity index. The overall similarity index is again represented by a coloured square and a percentage figure (this is the overall percentage of text in the originally submitted document that has been found in other electronic sources). See below:
The originally submitted file
The originally submitted file appears in the left-hand side of the window. Each piece of text that has been found in another electronic source is shown in ‘bold’, uniquely numbered and colour coded: one number and colour for each source. Any text that has not been matched with another source will appear as regular black text. See below.
The originality report
The originality report appears on the right-hand side of the window and is a listing of electronic sources which contain text that has been matched with text in the originally submitted file. The sources are numbered and colour coded: one number and colour for each source. The origin of each source is indicated above the URL, as is the percentage of the total submitted document that has been found in that single source. Publicly available sources such as online databases, online journals and other Internet sources can be accessed by ‘clicking’ on the coloured URL in the HTML copy or by typing that link into a Web browser. Sources are listed in order of the percentage of the total submitted document that has been found from a single source.
More sources can be revealed by clicking on the ‘drop down arrow’ to the right of the box saying ‘show highest matches together’, these extra sources can be revealed by clicking on ‘show matches one at a time’. This reveals all sources that may have previously been hidden by another source. See below:
Tip: If you intend to exclude quotes from your Turnitin report you need to use single or double quotation marks.
NOTE: Sources indicated in the right-hand panel are the first instance of the matched text which Turnitin comes across not necessarily the original source. Turnitin displays the first match that it finds, so it is possible that if you have used material from one source that the software will display a match from another source that contains the same text.
Four most common AskUNE questions
What is the maximum file size for an e-submittable assignment and can this be increased?
|
The maximum allowable total file size for a text-based document is 10 megabytes, and for a media file (such as an audio file) is 10 megabytes for each assignment. If your file is larger than this try reducing the size of any of the graphics that are in the file. If you are using MS Word and have included images in your document:
Note: If you don't see the Picture toolbar, click on VIEW, then TOOLBARS and then select PICTURE. To reduce the size of images prior to including them into a document please refer to the Guide to Scanning for e-Submission which has tips on how to do this. For more information on e-Submission please click here. You can also contact the Service Desk through the Contact Us tab above (or by phone on (02) 6773 5000 (02) 6773 5000 ) if you need help with reducing the size of your assignment. |
