UNE101: Tertiary Literacy Assessment (TLA) & Academic Integrity Module (AIM)
What is UNE101 and the TLA?
The TLA is a self-assessment tool consisting of a series of online quizzes. As of 2011, the TLA is part of UNE101: Introduction to Studying at UNE, which is a fee-free, not-for-credit module and is currently non-compulsory. All newly enrolled students are automatically entered into UNE101. It is strongly recommended that all newly enrolled undergraduate students complete the TLA.
The TLA is not a pass-fail test. It is there for you to learn something about what you do or do not know. The TLA will enable you to determine your personal strengths and weaknesses in the areas of academic writing; information literacy; computer literacy; and mathematics.
Knowing your own strengths and having them confirmed is empowering because it increases confidence. Understanding your weaker areas allows you to focus on specific tasks designed to build your skills in those areas and hence your self-esteem and confidence as a learner. The feedback you receive from the TLA will direct you to specific areas of the Academic Skills Office (ASO) website and other resources aimed at helping you improve your ability to succeed at tertiary study.
What is the AIM?
The new ‘Student coursework plagiarism and academic misconduct policy’ states that students are responsible for completing a self-test, the Academic Integrity Module (AIM), that covers aspects of the policy and notions of academic integrity, essential for successful and ethical study practices at UNE. The AIM module educates students about the contents of the new policy, what the university means by the term ‘plagiarism’ and how to incorporate the work of others into their own work without violating these rules. The policy states that “submitted assessments will not have their results processed until the module have been completed successfully”. The AIM is available in the UNE101 Moodle unit.
Further information and online workshops on referencing and plagiarism are available from the Academic Skills Office website and from eSKILLS on the Dixson Library website.
