The Academic Skills Office (ASO) is UNE's learning support unit and is part of the Teaching and Learning Centre. We are here to help you to succeed and excel in your studies. If you would like better results in your assignments, some suggestions on how to study more effectively, or any other study or academic skills related help, contact us.
We hope we can assist you to get the best out of your studies.

Our objectives

We are here to:

  • help you succeed in your studies by offering group and individual programs which will equip you with general academic skills (e.g. tertiary essay writing, referencing, reading strategies, notetaking, etc)
  • help you build specific skills that you might need in your particular course of study
  • encourage all students to develop their learning skills
  • help you to drive your own learning, without needing to depend on others.

Location

The Academic Skills Office is located on the top level of the Teaching & Learning Centre, TC Lamble Building. We also have the ASO Learning Centre on the ground floor of the Dixson Library.

Hours

The ASO Learning Centre is open Monday to Friday. Our hours are flexible as we are aware of the range of demands on student time.

Our staff

The ASO is staffed by lecturers with extensive experience in tertiary teaching and study skills advising. Their mission is to assist all students to reach their academic potential. They are supported by a project assistant and an administrative officer who coordinate and manage ASO’s diverse student programs.

To support first year internal students with specific learning requirements, there are First Year Advisors in each Faculty. They can provide assistance that's relevant to your field of study through workshops and short courses on study skills and course-specific academic writing.
