The second step: Making a plan

Here is a plan for the Reflection Paper, following the format of an Exposition, adapted from the NSW Board of Studies document English K-6: Modules (1998:345-6).

1. INTRODUCTION

Position Statement

There are three broad conditions under which learning best occurs, but they can only be fully implemented if the teacher, too, is open to learning.

Preview of Arguments

  • relevance of learning material

  • rich language program

  • environment of respect for learner

2. BODY

Arguments

Condition 1: Relevance

(examples from Dispersed Day, and from Feynman extract)

Condition 2: Language

(example from my childhood: comprehension test)

Condition 3: Environment of respect

(example from Prac. teacher prejudice inhibiting learning)

3. CONCLUSION

Reinforcement of statement of position

These three conditions are vital, but cannot be achieved unless the teacher is well-informed, critically reflective and open to change.

Teachers must live what they learn.
