Reading tools

Your understanding of academic texts (and the standard of your assignment writing) will be greatly enhanced by the expansion of your vocabulary. You will need to own both a good dictionary and a thesaurus.

Dictionary

A relatively recent and reputable dictionary of reasonable size is essential for successful tertiary study (e.g., Oxford University Press; Collins; Random House; Macquarie). You will encounter many unfamiliar words, and you will find that the meaning of many ‘familiar’ words needs to be checked. You will be surprised at the many alternative meanings attached to these familiar words. Often you will need to look up the meaning of words in essay topics. Becoming aware of their multiple meanings can give you helpful ideas in responding to an essay topic, or in suggesting avenues for further research.
