Learning design

This section contains sources of information about design standards and alternative assessment techniques.

Clearly structured learning materials benefit all students so planning for vision and hearing impaired students is not an additional burden.

Incorporate the following principles which will benefit all students:

  • communicate necessary information clearly and succinctly
  • scaffold learning by using a systematic approach to organising information and communicating this to students
  • choose layout and fonts according to acknowledged design standards for print and Web
  • design assessment tasks flexibly and seek advice about alternatives for vision or hearing impaired students from the Disabilities Adviser or an educational developer in TLC.

Contact the Disability Adviser in the UNE Equity Office or an educational developer in the TLC for assistance.

The TLC has developed a series of short booklets aimed at providing guidance to academic staff concerning basic design principles. The four booklets in the "Creating Distance Education Resources" series are available free to UNE staff. You can pick them up in the foyer of the TLC building or order by email: tlc@une.edu.au
