Wimba Create
What is Wimba Create?
Wimba Create (formerly known as Course Genie) is an add-in for Microsoft Word that allows you to create websites like the one pictured here (including navigation, images, colours, multimedia, quizzes, etc etc) without needing to know any special web programming software.
A site you create can then be uploaded to your UNE homepage, your Blackboard course, or anywhere else you like.
Click here for a brief conceptual overview of how Wimba Create works.
Obtaining Wimba Create
Wimba Create is useful for both academic and general staff, and UNE has a campus wide licence. You can download a copy from here (you will be prompted for a UNE username and password) and install it using the instructions below. If you need help, you can contact the the IT helpdesk or the TLC Learning Commons.
How to use Wimba Create
Click here for a short course in how to install and use Wimba Create (made by Sue Woodward, formerly of TLC). This course is created using Wimba Create, so will give you an idea of some of the possibilities. The word doc from which it was generated is available here. Comparing this word document and the Wimba Create course can give a good impression of how you can use Wimba Create to make your own website.
If you prefer to read the instructions from paper, there is a pdf version of the same material here - or inside the folder you download to obtain Wimba Create.
Wimba Create requires
- Windows NT4 (SP6), 2000, XP or Vista running on a PC or on a Mac using Bootcamp or similar
- Microsoft Word 2000, XP, 2003 or 2007
Installing the 'Campus Edition' of Wimba Create
Please note the following information is covered in more detail in the Wimba Create course.
- Open the Wimba Create zip folder (called wimbaCreate.zip) and unzip it to a temporary directory.
- Run setup.exe and follow the on-screen instructions. The campus version will not function until you have installed the license.
- To install the license, move the file key.enc (found in the zip folder you used to download WimbaCreate) into C:\Programfiles\CourseGenie. This allows WimbaCreate to ‘see’ the license file.
- If prompted, allow Macros to be enabled for Wimba Create.
Installing templates containing Wimba styles
- See wimba_create_tlc.pdf inside the zip folder you have downloaded for full instructions.
- The latest Wimba templates can be download here: Assessment 2009, Information 2009, and Topic 2009.
Installing University Colour Schemes
There are five specific colour schemes relating to the University of New England, which have been included in the folder called ‘wimba schemes’. To use these, open the folder and select all, then move them into the following location: ‘C:\Programfiles\courseGenie\resources\en.lproj\schemes’.
Initial use of Wimba Create
- Open Word document to be converted to HTML.
- Go to Add-Ins tab.
- Click on Wimba Create dropdown arrow and select Start Wimba Create.
- All further instructions are contained within the wimba_create_tlc.pdf file.
