Othello live outdoors at UNE in 2000

William Shakespeare's Othello, when the party's over...

Where:

The lawns of Booloominbah, UNE

The inaugural production of the UNE Outdoor Shakespeare Festival: Othello, was selected to be of the greatest benefit to the largest number of Year-12 students studying for the HSC in the State. The aim was to create a production in the tradition of Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet, telling a tragic story with high energy, exuberance, and making the most of the rich vein of carnivalesque comedy in the play.

The production was directed by Adrian Kiernander, Professor of Theatre Studies at UNE, who has had many years of experience as an actor and director of successful, colourful, popular and energetic outdoor Shakespeare productions in New Zealand. It incorporated a commedia dell'arte troupe which is currently operating at the University of New England.

Most performances were in the evening, but there were two daytime performances so that it was easier for more distant schools to travel to Armidale. The performances of Othello were preceded by introductory lectures for interested members of the audience.
