Theatre Studies is offered at undergraduate level, as a 3-year major in a Bachelor of Arts degree, at Honours level and at further postgraduate levels. Units and areas of study cover the history, theory and practice of theatre and drama. Students have an opportunity to study both externally (off-campus or distance education) or internally (on-campus).
Why study Theatre?
Theatre Studies at UNE has a long tradition of combining the theoretical and practical aspects of theatre. All postgraduate work is expected to integrate a practical understanding with an awareness of theoretical concerns, and suitable facilities for performance work are made available. Theatre staff have had extensive experience in vocational drama schools or the professional theatre.
The current facilities include two performance studios, rehearsal rooms, lecture and seminar spaces, a comprehensive single and multiple-copy script library, dressing rooms, as well as construction and storage spaces for scenery, costumes and properties. Students have access to the University's Arts Theatre, with a proscenium stage and fly tower.
Technical Officers are in charge of set construction, lighting and all equipment and are available to give advice and instruction in the technical areas of theatre.
The School stages major public productions as well as experimental productions arising out of coursework and research. In addition, the School is closely linked with theatre groups from the city. There are many opportunities for postgraduate students to initiate or participate in practical theatre projects which relate to their theoretical studies.
UNE has excellent teaching facilities, a long history of performing arts activity and is located halfway between Sydney and Brisbane. These features make it particularly attractive for postgraduate students who want to get away for a time from the distractions of metropolitan life to concentrate on research while still keeping in touch with major theatre events in the capital cities.
