Introduction
The School of Arts offers distinctive programs in Writing at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. These programs are relevant to many employment areas and provide a constructive framework for pursuing both professional and creative interests in the art and craft of writing.
In Writing programs at UNE, you can explore:
- Reading and writing popular genres (eg travel writing)
- Reading and writing non-fiction

Students may also take an internship – through the UNE ‘Workready’ unit (WORK 300/500) – in a relevant field and have it count towards their qualification.
Undergraduate
If you are interested in pursuing a major in Writing, you may do so either in the Bachelor of Media and Communications or in the Bachelor of Arts.

The Bachelor of Media and Communications has a major in ‘Writing and Publishing’. This major represents just over half the number of units needed to complete the degree, that is 78 out of a total of 144 credit points.
The Bachelor of Arts has a major called ‘Writing’, which is 48 credit points in the degree of 144 credit points.
These majors develop knowledge of a range of genres and help students become skilled and versatile writers.
Postgraduate Coursework
Studies in Writing are part of several UNE postgraduate coursework programs.

- Writing units in this field contribute to the Graduate Certificate in Arts and the Graduate Diploma in Humanities.
- In the coursework Master of Arts, there is a ‘Writing’ major. Writing units may also be taken as electives if you are studying a different major.
Higher Degree Research
Higher degree research may be undertaken in Media and Communications at UNE, either by traditional thesis or in ‘Creative Practice’, with supervision, in the Master of Arts (Honours) and PhD programs. Please see our postgraduate information pages for more details.
