Introduction

Special education is about the provision of quality educational services to students with special needs. The study of inclusive and special education has been a mandatory requirement of initial teacher training in Australia for many years and the Special Education Team at the University of New England have a long and proud tradition of quality teaching and researching in this area. On this page you will find out a little more about the teaching and research of the Special Education team at UNE.

Why Study Special Education at UNE?

The Special Education team at UNE is highly qualified and experienced with diverse interests in the field of special and inclusive education. For many years this Team has been providing quality courses and units at undergraduate and postgraduate levels for students studying on campus and at a distance. The Team are involved in a range of research projects and maintain close involvement with special and inclusive education practice in a variety of educational settings.

Students studying special education at UNE consistently report high levels of satisfaction with the personal attention they receive from members of the Team, for their enthusiasm and the depth of their knowledge. In our teaching we engage students through use of face to face strategies as well as use of online technologies.

Careers

There is a diverse range of exciting careers in special education. Our generalist undergraduate special education unit  is a mandatory part of all teacher training programs at UNE. Our combined degree in special education and disabilities studies is a unique opportunity for graduates seeking employment in schools as special eduction teachers or as educators in the disability field. Many teachers undertake postgraduate study in special education to increase their professional skills or to move into more specialist areas of school education.
