Study Science Education at UNE

Introduction

On this page you will find information about studying science and technology education at UNE. Teacher education, including primary science, has a long history at UNE, being established in 1928 at the previous teachers’ college, with secondary science introduced in the 1950s and a one year Dip Ed for science graduates being introduced in the 1960s. High quality provision at UNE is well established, which is reflected in the demand for our graduates as teachers. Our priority in our teacher education courses is for active and meaningful learning with application of science and technology to real life phenomena and important social and environmental issues. We emphasise that learning science and technology is interesting, engaging and increases our appreciation and understanding of the world. As developing teachers we encourage you to be confident and creative in your approach to science and technology education.

Why study Science Education at UNE?

At UNE we have great on-campus accommodation, a vibrant campus life, excellent distance-education, sporting facilities, skilled and experienced staff, and more.

Aside from UNE being a great place to study there are many other reasons to study science and technology education as part of a teaching qualification at UNE. We have an outstanding external study program, which is evident in the fact that 80% of our student body studies externally. We provide on-line support for external programmes, including podcasts and discussion forums, and residential schools provide student-teacher interaction for most of our externally offered units. On campus courses offer full interaction with staff and students in stimulating workshops and seminars related to teaching science and technology. All students engage in practical teaching experience in schools as part of their course.

Science and technology tutors (links) are widely experienced in school and university environments, so they can support students from first hand experience in their development as teachers. Science and technology tutors actively carry out research into science learning and science in relation to education for sustainability, which directly informs the education programmes.

Secondary education courses also include science study at university level within the science department as well as science education.
