Hyman Scholarship for Nursing

The University of New England has established undergraduate scholarships to support country students who have a record of academic achievement, and have been involved in leadership positions in school and the community.  Some scholarships are funded by donations or grants from individuals or organisations and may include specific criteria beyond the usual University requirements.  The Aberbaldie Foundation has been providing education bursaries for rural students since 1979 and has now joined with UNE to offer the Hyman Nursing Scholarship.

This scholarship is available to school leaver's commencing full-time, on-campus studies at the University of New England in an undergraduate course in Nursing in the year of application.

School leaver recipients of the Hyman Nursing Scholarship are expected to reside in one of the UNE residents for at least the first year.

The recipient of a Hyman Nursing Scholarship is expected to seek and gain employment in rural, regional or remote New South Wales for 2 years after completing their degree.

Am I Eligible?

To apply, you must be:

  • Open to students completing Year 12 and gap year/s students who are commencing university study for the first time in the year of application and who will be aged 21 or under at the start of the academic teaching year, and students who have already been admitted to UNE under the gifted and talented arrangements with the NSW Board of Studies.
  • The applicant must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident as defined by the Commonwealth refer to www.goingtouni.gov.au who has applied, via UAC or QTAC, for admission to a Nursing course.
  • The applicant must be able to demonstrate financial disadvantage
  • An ATAR of at least 77.10 (or equivalent) is required
Selection:
  • For school leavers the scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit as indicated by the applicant's performance in the NSW HSC, or equivalent.
  • The Undergraduate Scholarships Committee will also consider:
    • Involvement and leadership in school and community activities; and
    • Commitment to the proposed course.
  • The applicant must attach evidence to support financial need
Documents Required:
  • Principal's Report and Recommendation from the Undergraduate Scholarship Application Form
  • Attach evidence to support financial need, which may be:
    • a copy of a Centrelink statement; or
    • your parent's/parents' Income Tax Return/s (if dependent); or
    • your own Income Tax Return (if independent); or
    • a letter from an authorised person (e.g. School principal, minister of religion, account) that comments on the applicant's financial circumstances.
