Clinical information
Clinical experience at UNE forms a major part of study as an undergraduate nursing student. The amount and quality of clinical placement experience that a UNE student undertakes means that they are well prepared to enter the nursing workforce as new graduates and are highly sought after by Health Service employers.
Students complete a significant number of hours of clinical experience in NSW Health Facilities (inpatient and community settings) located in rural, remote, regional and metropolitan areas. Students may also undertake placement experience within Private Agencies, Non Government Organisations and on occasion with interstate Health Services, although this is extremely limited and cannot be guaranteed in any way. Clinical placements at UNE are organised as blocks of 2, 3 and 4 weeks, because we believe that block placements allow students to engage in meaningful clinical practice and become part of the Health Service interdisciplinary team. The Nurses and Midwives Board of NSW stipulates that students must have clinical learning placements in the following areas: Medical; Surgical; Mental Health; Aged Care and Community/Primary Health Care Nursing.
UNE arranges clinical placements through the Clinical School in Armidale. The Clinical Placement Manager, Clinical Coordinator-Academic and two Administrative Assistants staff the Clinical School. The Clinical Placement Manager is responsible for day to day management of the clinical component of the undergraduate nursing course. The Clinical Coordinator-Academic delivers clinical education workshops, oversees the Clinical office and student progression as well as having an academic role within the university that involves teaching in the undergraduate and postgraduate nursing courses.
To be eligible to proceed to clinical placement experience students must meet attendance criteria, UNE policy requirements and display evidence of all mandatory requirements specified by NSW Health. Students who do not meet any of the above mandatory requirements will be unable to progress to clinical placement experience and will be unable to meet the University’s pre-registration course requirements.
- NSW Health Policy requires all nursing students to comply with State vaccination requirements.
- NSW Health requires all nursing students have a Criminal Record Clearance and sign a declaration stating that they have no criminal convictions involving children.
- The Clinical School require evidence of first aid certification or current CPR (Endorsed Enrolled Nurses only).
- Students should be ‘fit’ for clinical practice. That is, if you have a disability or condition that you think will limit your ability to fully participate in clinical placement experience, you will need to disclose this information to the Clinical Coordinator- Academic.
- Students must purchase a UNE clinical uniform and organise a Clinical Identification badge through the Clinical School.
More detailed instruction on clinical placement requirements will be available in the Undergraduate Student Nurse Clinical Placement Information Booklet. Students will receive a copy of this booklet in Orientation Week.
