Mathematics Education
Introduction
Mathematics is a core discipline in school education. At UNE, units of study are offered in primary and secondary curriculum methods in mathematics. These units are research-based and include all strands of the mathematics curriculum. Although the main curriculum document used is the NSW syllabus, the units will equip you to teach mathematics in every state of Australia. Units are also available at Masters level. There is a strong research base among the mathematics education staff at UNE, and enquiries about study at Masters Honours, Education Doctorate and PhD level are welcomed.
Studying Mathematics Education at UNE
In the primary curriculum, Mathematics is a core subject. Students undertaking any of the pre-service primary courses will experience three units of mathematics education. One of these units will focus on personal mathematical development. The others will be curriculum focussed.
In the secondary area, mathematics education units are offered at both Junior Secondary (Years 7 – 10) and Senior Secondary (Years 11 – 12) levels. Entry requirements for the secondary pre-service units are detailed under unit requirements, and meet NSW Institute of Teachers expectations.
All units are based on current research supporting constructivist approaches to developing students’ mathematical understanding. Use of technology as an educational tool is an important component of all units.
Careers
There is a shortage of qualified teachers of mathematics in Australia and overseas. The future, therefore, is bright for all students who qualify as secondary mathematics teachers. In addition, there is an increasing emphasis on the development of subject area specialists at the primary level.
