About Us
Australian History was one of UNE’s founding disciplines, and now resides within the School of Humanities. This area is currently composed of:

- Dr Erin Ihde
- Dr Andrew Piper
- Professor Alan Atkinson (Emeritus Professor)
Our contingent is supplemented by Lorina Barker, who was employed in 2004 by the then Faculty of Arts as an Indigenous scholar. Lorina is assigned to the School of Humanities, where she is currently researching her PhD and teaching as a multidisciplinary Associate Lecturer.
Former and recently departed members include Frank Bongiorno, John Ferry, Norma Townsend, John Atchison, Carl Bridge, Michael Sturma, Isabel McBryde, Brian Dalton, Jo Woolmington, Miriam Dixson, Sandy Yarwood and Russel Ward. The strength of the Australian History area at UNE is marked by:
- a broad and diverse range of Units in Australian History which contribute to our Graduate and Advanced Diplomas of Local, Family and Applied History, as well as to other awards such as the BA/BTeach, Bachelor of International Studies and Bachelor of Criminology
- a solid reputation as one of the nation’s most significant centres of research in Australian history, with a strong research culture, especially in colonial, local, applied and family history
- a long and robust tradition of higher degree research, including many recent completions, covering many areas of Australian and comparative history
- the production (since 1999) of the Journal of Australian Colonial History, which has a broad and expanding readership and an increasing reputation as one of Australia’s leading scholarly journals
- active participation in a variety of key organisations, networks, panels and committees a leading involvement in the activities of UNE's Heritage Futures Research Centre.
