Ecology

Introduction
This site provides information on Ecology courses at UNE. Ecology is the scientific study of the interaction between animals, plants, micro-organisms and their environment. It is a vital science that underpins our ability to conserve biodiversity and maintain ecosystem services such as fresh air, clean water, carbon dioxide balance and productive soils for agriculture.
Why study Ecology at UNE?
UNE is close to an exceptional range of natural and modified ecosystems, from rainforests through to semi-arid woodlands and grasslands, as well as freshwater and marine ecosystems. If you take Ecology at UNE you will have the opportunity to visit all of these ecosystems and study the animals and plants that live in them, in small classes with knowledgeable staff.
Courses
- Bachelor of Ecology
- Bachelor of Science (Biodiversity and Ecology)
- Bachelor of Environmental Science
- Bachelor of Natural Resources - no longer offered
- Bachelor of Marine Science and Management - no longer offered
Units
Students specialising in Ecology will take one first year and three second year Ecology units:
ECOL100 Ecology: Concepts and Applications
ECOL203 Ecological Gradients - Populations to Ecosystems
ECOL204 Ecological Methods
ECOL202 Marine and Aquatic Ecology
We offer two third year Ecology units, plus a wide range of units in Botany (BOTY), Ecosystem Management (EM), Evolution (EVOL), Marine Science (MSM) and Zoology (ZOOL), which focus on the evolution, variety and conservation of biodiversity, and behavioural and physiological ecology:
ECOL307 Ecology of Plant Populations
ECOL311 Ecology of Australian Vegetation
Careers
Ecologists are needed to provide the scientific background for conserving Australia’s unique and threatened ecosystems, animals and plants. Graduates that are trained in ecology find employment as teachers, researchers and in local, state and federal government agencies as well as with non-government organisations.
