Overview of the Bachelor of Computer Science Software Engineering Major

The Software Engineering major includes core units on introductory programming, basic concepts of computer science and techniques for software development. Particular subjects covered within the major include systems analysis and design, object-oriented programming, human-computer interaction and software project management. The major also includes a project unit in which software is developed for a real application. A number of electives can be chosen from computer science subjects or other subjects offered by the University. This major is designed for students who want a broad range of software development knowledge and skills.

Duration and Prerequisites

This is a three year full-time degree. Assumed knowledge is Mathematics at NSW HSC level, or equivalent. For students without the recommended background knowledge, UNE offers a Foundation unit in Mathematics. Students are also able to articulate into the Bachelor of Computer Science on completion of the NSW TAFE Diploma in Information Technology or equivalent which counts for three semesters of full-time study.

The Bachelor of Computer Science has been granted Level A accreditation by the Computer Society of Australia. Commencement is possible in either first or second semester. Study can be taken either full-time or part-time and either on campus or fully online.
