Study Complementary and Allied Health

Introduction

Complementary medicine promises to be one of the fastest growing health fields of the early 21st Century. Almost $1 billion is spent each year in Australia on complementary medicine and using the services of complementary & allied health practitioners. Research conducted both in Australia and in other Western countries has revealed that more than 50 per cent of the population now use either natural remedies or the professional services of complementary therapists at least once a year.

With the increasing global trend towards the provision of a more integrated and interdisciplinary approach to health care, there is a growing need to develop broad based health awards which combine a high standard of practitioner training with a solid foundation for understanding the biopsychosocial aspects of health and illness.

The University of New England's Complementary & Allied Health program addresses this need by offering integrated, practitioner-based awards, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The School of Health has a number of current postgraduate students undertaking research in health. A range of research topics for prospective postgraduate applicants is also available.

Courses

The Bachelor of Applied Health has been specifically developed to provide vocationally qualified health professionals with an advanced level of knowledge, understanding and skills in aspects of human biology and applied aspects of health.

The degree has proved to be very popular with nurses who want an undergraduate qualification which is more relevant to a changing work context, and other health professionals, including practitioners of complementary therapies and allied health practitioners, who require a University-based qualification in the health field. Graduates will be equipped to become advocates for their profession through sustainable practice, with the capacity to successfully pursue a range of health related careers.

Graduates may use this award to enhance their professional practice, as well as for entry into postgraduate research studies such as the Bachelor of Health Science (Honours), where the emphasis is on developing and applying further research and evidence based practice skills, or the Master of Health Science (Honours), a research based degree where students specialise in completing a research thesis.

The Graduate Diploma of Health Science (Herbal Medicine), Master of Health Science (Herbal Medicine) provides degree qualified health practitioners with clinically orientated education in modern western Herbal Medicine. This course was devised and written by Associate Professor Kerry Bone, a leading national and international author, educator and researcher in Herbal Medicine.
