Introduction
The School of Humanities teaches a full range of units in the Classical Greek and Latin Languages (CLLA). The learning of Classical Greek and Latin provides an essential foundation for an understanding of the cultures of the Ancient Mediterranean world, by enabling you to read in the original the literature produced by the Greek and Roman peoples.
Knowing one or both of these languages is the way to enter into the minds of such great authors and thinkers from antiquity as Homer, Julius Caesar, Plato or Virgil, just as a few examples. Greece and Rome are the foundation-stones of European culture and the writings are as relevant to today’s world as they were so many thousands of years ago.
The civilisations of Greece and Rome were an inspiration and a model for much of Western culture, in Europe and Britain as well as the Americas, Australia, and other parts of the world which experienced European settlement.
Initially, when enrolling in the CLLA units you will need to choose whether you wish to pursue the Latin or Classical Greek strand. It is normal that students will pursue only one of the languages, although it is certainly possible to study both. Following the two introductory 100 level units, there are a range of CLLA units which build up your knowledge in the languages and increase the range of your reading. You are able to gain a full major in Classical Languages and Honours is available in either language.
Why Study Classics at UNE?
Classical Greek and Latin have been extremely important in the formation of our own language and culture. The influence of the Greek and Latin languages on English, as well as Modern Greek, French, Italian, Spanish, and the other romance languages has been profound.
The study of Philosophy, History, Literature, Theatre, Political Science, Archaeology, Studies in Religion and many other disciplines in the humanities will also be greatly enriched by a knowledge of Classical literature and culture.
From 2008 both Latin and Greek at UNE will have an online presence with unit material and podcasts of lectures available via the unit webpage for on and off-campus students.

Careers
Classical Languages were traditionally the study of the English educated elite and the entry-point to all professions such as government and the public service.
A grounding in classical languages instills an ability to think critically, communicate effectively, develop an expertise in logical thinking and problem solving, and acquire a global perspective, all of which skills are highly regarded in a wide range of careers in today’s world.
Partnerships and Networks
The University of New England is spearheading a new online program, Classics around Australia, aimed at teaching Latin and Greek into other Australian universities where the languages are not currently available.
