Advanced Standing rules as per the General Rules of the former faculties of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Economics, Business and Law; Education, Health and Professional Studies; and The Sciences will apply as a transitional measure in 2008.
Rule 1 applies to courses offered by the Schools of Arts; Humanities; and Behavioural, Cognitive and Social Science
1.1. Subject to such restrictions as may be specified in the rules governing each diploma, advanced diploma, degree, graduate certificate and graduate diploma offered by the school, advanced standing may be granted as follows:
(a) for the purposes of the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Communication Studies, Bachelor of Languages, Bachelor of Psychology with Honours and the Bachelor of Social Science, the maximum number of credit points for which advanced standing may be granted shall be determined as follows:
(i) a student who has completed units approved by the school may be granted advanced standing for units up to the equivalent of 96 credit points towards the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Communication Studies, Bachelor of Languages, Bachelor of Psychology with Honours and the Bachelor of Social Science;
(b) candidates for the Advanced Diploma in Arts, Advanced Diploma in Local, Family and Applied History, Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning, Graduate Diploma in Local, Family and Applied History, and Graduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning may be granted advanced standing by the school on the recommendation of the appropriate coordinator responsible for the award;
(c) candidates for the Diploma in Indigenous Archaeology, Diploma in Modern Languages, Diploma in Town Planning, Graduate Diploma in Humanities, Graduate Diploma in Social Science may, at the discretion of the school, be granted advanced standing for not more than 12 credit points on the basis of studies at another institution;
(d) candidates seeking advanced standing towards the Advanced Diploma in Arts and the Advanced Diploma in Local, Family and Applied History may be granted advanced standing for not more than 48 credit points on the basis of studies at another institution.
1.2. A student of this University may be granted advanced standing for units passed towards another qualification offered by this University, provided that such units shall be counted towards only one qualification and shall be subject to the rules of the particular course towards which advanced standing is sought. There shall be no maximum to advanced standing granted under this rule.
1.3. Where a graduate or diplomate has been granted advanced standing for units, he or she may not take, for a qualification offered by the school, any units which have reasonable correspondence to units included in the qualification held.
1.4. Advanced standing shall not be granted for units passed elsewhere after enrolment at the University of New England if the candidate has not previously obtained the permission of the school to enrol in them. Such permission will only be granted in exceptional circumstances.
1.5. A candidate for the Bachelor of Arts or the Bachelor of Communication Studies or the Bachelor of Psychology with Honours or the Bachelor of Social Science who has been granted advanced standing:
(a) for units passed at another institution; and/or
(b) for units passed in another school of this University and not listed for the Bachelor of Arts, or Group II for the Bachelor of Social Science, shall pass units to the value of 36 credit points at 200/300 level, of which at least 12 shall be at 300 level, in a single subject offered for the degrees of the Faculty. In the case of Bachelor of Social Science candidates, these units shall be in Group II.
1.6. A candidate of the Bachelor of Arts component of the double Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws degrees who has been granted Advanced Standing for units passed at another institution must pass a minimum of 24 credit points at 200/300 level, including at least 12 credit points at 300 level, in a single subject listed in Rule 3.2.1. of the Bachelor of Arts.
1.7. Where advanced standing is granted the school may reduce the minimum time prescribed for completion of the remaining course requirements.
1.8. Candidates for the Bachelor of Arts (including the Bachelor of Arts component of the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws), Bachelor of Languages, Bachelor of Psychology with Honours or Bachelor of Social Science granted advanced standing for 300 level credit points on the basis of a degree already awarded shall not count this advanced standing in satisfaction of the 300-level unit requirements of these awards.
1.9. Advanced standing shall not be granted for any unit awarded a grade considered by the school to be equivalent to a terminating pass.
1.10. (a) Subject to such restrictions as may be specified in the rules governing each diploma, advanced diploma, degree, graduate certificate and graduate diploma offered by the school, the school will consider applications for advanced standing on the basis of the following at a standard equivalent to the unit for which advanced standing is being sought:
(i) courses provided by professional bodies, enterprises, private educational institutions and/or other providers recognised by the school;
(ii) learning from work or other forms of practical experience, subject to the provision of appropriate documentation;
(iii) experiential learning.
All applicants for advanced standing on the basis of Rule 1.10.(a)(iii) must successfully complete a challenge examination. Challenge examinations may also be prescribed for those seeking advanced standing on the basis of applications under Rule 1.10.(a)(i) and (ii) at the discretion of the school.
(b) On the recommendation of the relevant course coordinator, the school may grant exemption from a particular unit on the basis of prior learning as defined in Rule 1.10.(a). Such exemption will not count as advanced standing towards an award of the school.
(c) Applicants for advanced standing on the basis of prior learning as defined in Rule 1.10. shall only be eligible to receive advanced standing for designated units offered by The University of New England.
Rule 2 applies to courses offered by the Schools of Environmental and Rural Science; and Science and Technology
The following rules apply except where there are specific provisions within the school’s individual course rules.
2.1 (a) A student may count all completed University units towards one of the school’s courses where those units are permitted in the relevant course rules and provided that the units have not been counted towards another University qualification except where this is permitted in the course rules.
(b) A student who has completed units at another institution, which are deemed by the school to be equivalent to units offered by the University and approved for the student’s course, may count all of the equivalent units up to the limits set down in Rule 2.2.
2.2. (a) A bachelor student may be granted up to 67 per cent of degree requirements in advanced standing for units completed for another awarded qualification.
(b) Students in other courses will not be granted advanced standing for units counted towards another awarded qualification except as set down in Rule 2.1.(a).
2.3. A student may be granted advanced standing on the basis of considerable professional experience in a relevant field of interest, as recommended to the school by the course coordinator, and where permitted in the course rules.
2.4. A student who has been granted advanced standing shall have the maximum period of candidature reduced in proportion to the number of credit points of advanced standing awarded.
2.5. Where a student has completed a unit deemed by the school as equivalent to one that is compulsory for the University course but the student is ineligible to receive advanced standing for it, that student will have an alternative unit prescribed by the school.
Rule 3 applies to courses offered by the Schools of Economics, Business and Public Policy (former EBL courses only) and Law
3.1. The Rules of the former Faculty of Economics, Business and Law conform to the University’s Policy on Advanced Standing and the Australian Vice-Chancellor’s Committee (AVCC) Credit Transfer Principles.
3.2. Candidates seeking professional accreditation from a professional body must seek advice from that body as to whether any advanced standing granted by the school will satisfy their accreditation requirements. The school accepts no responsibility if the advanced standing granted to candidates does not meet the accreditation requirements of professional bodies.
3.3. Advanced standing may only be granted on the basis of units completed not more than 10 years prior to the academic year for which the advanced standing is sought.
3.4. The units for which advanced standing is granted must be such that they have reasonable correspondence to units offered for the course. A unit will be judged to have a reasonable correspondence with a unit at the University only if, in the opinion of the head of school concerned, the applicant is qualified to proceed with further units in the subject in the University of New England. Unspecified credit appropriate to the course may be granted where no comparable unit exists at this University but where the learning is still relevant and at an appropriate level in terms of the specific course.
The maximum number of credit points that may be counted shall be determined as follows:
(a) a candidate may be granted advanced standing for tertiary study at this University or any other institution approved by the school, for up to 67 per cent of the requirements for an undergraduate qualification, or for each component in the case of combined courses, offered by the school;
(b) a candidate may be granted advanced standing for tertiary study at this University or any other institution approved by the school, for up to 67 per cent of the requirements for a major or specialist stream within an undergraduate course of the school;
(c) a candidate may be granted advanced standing under the terms of the specific rules governing advanced standing for postgraduate courses of the school; and
(d) there shall be no maximum to the advanced standing which may be granted for units completed at The University of New England that have not been counted towards a previous qualification.
3.5. (a) A candidate who has been granted advanced standing towards the Bachelor of Agribusiness, Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of Economics, or the Bachelor of Financial Administration for units passed elsewhere shall pass at least two units at 200 level and at least two units at 300 level from units offered by the schools in Rule 3.
(b) A candidate who has been granted advanced standing towards the Bachelor of Agricultural and Resource Economics for units passed elsewhere shall pass at least two units at 300 level and at least two units at 400 level, excluding the Research Seminar, ECON 496, from units offered by the schools listed in Rule 3.
3.6. A student who has been granted advanced standing shall have the maximum period of candidature reduced in proportion with the amount of credit points of advanced standing awarded.
3.7. Advanced standing shall not be granted for units passed elsewhere after enrolment at The University of New England, if the candidate has not previously obtained the permission of the school to enrol in them. (Candidates are referred to the Faculty Policy on Permission to Enrol Elsewhere.)
3.8. (a) Subject to such restrictions as may be specified in the rules governing each course offered by the school, the school will consider applications for advanced standing on the basis of the following at a standard equivalent to the unit for which advanced standing is being sought:
(i) courses provided by professional bodies, enterprises, private educational institutions and/or other providers recognised by the school;
(ii) learning from work or other forms of practical experience, subject to the provisions of appropriate documentation;
(iii) experiential learning.
All applicants for advanced standing on the basis of Rule 3.8.(a)(iii) must successfully complete a challenge examination. Challenge examinations may also be prescribed for those seeking advanced standing on the basis of applications under Rule 3.8.(a)(i) and (ii) at the discretion of the school.
(b) On the recommendations of the relevant head of school, and where advanced standing is not available, the school may grant exemption from a particular unit on the basis of prior learning as defined in Rule 3.8.(a). Such exemption will not count as advanced standing towards an award of the school.
(c) Applicants for advanced standing on the basis of prior learning as defined in Rule 3.8.(a)(ii) and (iii) shall only be eligible to receive advanced standing for designated units offered by The University of New England.
Rule 4 applies to courses offered by the Schools of Business, Economics and Public Policy (former EHPS courses only); Education; and Health
4.1 .Credit shall be granted in terms of specified or unspecified units or credit points, as appropriate for the award toward which the credit is granted.
4.2. Credit may be granted for units passed at a university or other approved institution except as provided for in Rule 4.3., for in-house programs offered by industry and for significant learning acquired through employment and other experience, provided that such units or in-house programs or significant learning:
(a) are of equivalent standard to units offered at the University;
(b) are appropriate to the candidate’s course;
(c) are not units taken as probationary units and for which the grade of Pass has been awarded;
(d) are not taken as part of a preliminary course, provisional course, or any course or prescribed special program of bridging studies.
4.3. Credit shall not be granted toward the Graduate Diploma in Education on the basis of units which have already counted to a completed qualification.
4.4. Partial credit may be granted on the basis of studies equivalent in level but only partially equivalent in content. Such credit shall be counted towards a unit only following enrolment in the relevant unit and satisfactory completion of the remaining requirements of that unit.
4.5. Credit shall not be granted for the thesis, doctoral portfolio or dissertation component of any qualification.
4.6. Credit shall not be granted for any unit, in-house program or significant learning acquired through employment or other experience where such units, in-house programs or employment or other experience are part of the basis for admission to candidature to awards whose course requirements have already taken into account such units, in-house programs or other significant learning.
4.7. There shall be no maximum to credit granted for units which have been passed at this University prior to admission to candidature and which have not been counted towards a previous qualification.
4.8. Credit granted on the basis of units which have already counted to any single award shall not exceed one-quarter of the credit points required for the award to which credit is sought.
4.9. Except as provided under Rule 4.7., the total credit granted shall not exceed 67 per cent of the total credit points or units required for the award toward which credit is sought.
4.10. Credit may be granted for units passed elsewhere after admission to candidature provided that the candidate has previously obtained the permission of the school to enrol in such units.
4.11. Where credit is granted the school may reduce proportionately the candidate’s period of candidature.
4.12. A candidate who is readmitted to candidature following withdrawal or termination of candidature may be granted credit.
4.13. Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, the school may, for any course, prescribe a minimum number and/or level of units which all persons enrolled in that course are required to enrol in and pass at this University.
