Zi. Adnan is an experienced language teacher. He has taught languages for nearly 16 years. He began with teaching English at a prestigious private high school called SMA Muhammadyah in Padang, Indonesia in 1980. In 1981 he taught English to Indo-Chinese refugees in Galang Refugee Camp for the Save the Children Fund and Experiment in International Living till mid 1982.

From 1990 to 1992 he taught Indonesian at the RAAF School of Languages, Point Cook, Victoria, and in 1993 he taught Indonesian at the University of Melbourne and the RMIT, and from 1994 to 2001 at Murdoch University in Perth. At Murdoch University he was nominated for the Vice Chancellor’s Teaching Award in 2000. He has been at UNE since 2002.

Research interests

Zi's main research interests include Indonesian Political History, esp. the history of Islam and politics in Indonesia, and Applied Linguistics. He has written and published considerably on Islam and the State in Indonesia, terrorism in Indonesia, and Applied Linguistics (Discourse analysis and Second language acquisition).
