Research interests
- indigenous archaeology, including both pre-contact and post-contact histories,
- people’s attachment to space and place,
- the teaching of Archaeology,
- palaeoethnobotany,
- World Heritage.
My current position involves university teaching, service and research in archaeology and cultural heritage. Until July, 2007 I was Deputy Head of the School of Human and Environmental Studies, and Convenor, Archaeology and Palaeoanthropology. My teaching methods range from ARPA 3/443Field Methods, which is a very practically oriented teaching, to ARPA 104 Studying the human past, which has a more traditional teaching style with lectures and tutorials, to ARPA 3/452 Public Archaeology which is taught entirely on-line through reading and bulletin board discussions.
I have a particular interest in Problem Based Learning.
I am currently a member of University committees at School level (Teaching and Learning Committee and Member of the Heritage Futures Research Centre) and University level (eg. UNE Panel on Ethical Research involving Aborigines & Torres Strait Islanders).
I have successfully held a number of competitive external research grants including four Australian Research Council grants since 1993. and I have recently held a Carrick Grant for ‘Benchmarking Archaeology Honours degrees’ in 2007-2008. I have also held several Small ARC grants and a Partnership Industry Research Grant with NSW State Forests.
