Professor Parker is a registered nurse who has a joint appointment between the University and Hunter New England Area Health Service, as a Chair in Rural Nursing. Her health service role is based in the Research and Practice Development in the Centre for Practice Opportunity and Development. This Centre provides leadership and support for clinical researchers across the Hunter New England Area. Professors Parker’s research expertise is mainly in qualitative methods, particularly phenomenological and critical ethnography. However, much of her work centres around supporting clinicians is mixed methods research, in recognition of the various forms of questions and data available within clinical practice environments that can inform better understanding of health and illness and the outcomes of health care. Over the last three years much of this work has been in rural areas with a focus on rural practice. Professor Parker teaches in the area of critical care as well as supervises higher degree research students. Professor Parker has established effective links with international scholars working in the area of inter-professional practice.
