Areas of Teaching
Lecturer in Compostion and Peformance
Steve’s primary areas of focus and teaching are in music composition and performance and he is one half of the EphenStephen guitar duo (www.ephenstephen.com) with Stephen Tafra. EphenStephen have performed widely in Australian and overseas and are regularly broadcast on ABC Classic FM. He has performed and composed repertoire across many different genres, and approaches his teaching from this background coupled with cross-disciplinary perspectives, building an approach where students develop a broad understanding and appreciation for the creation of all music. As coordinator of the “Music Creativity” units at UNE, Steve has the belief that all musicians (and, indeed, all students) should have the opportunity to explore music composition and the ability to see and participate in music from the inside out, as well as the outside in.
Research interests
Steve’s compositions and performances have a wide focus from surf guitar instrumental music through to contemporary western art music and everything in between. His music has been commissioned and played by a wide variety of musicians from students through to professional ensembles, and as one half of the EphenStephen guitar duo he in turn has premiered and commissioned much new music for guitar duo. EphenStephen has released 2 CDs to date, GUITARmidale and their transcription of J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations. Of particular relevance to Steve’s creative output is an interest in the New York minimalist and post-minimalist scene, as well as the areas of transcription and 60s guitar instrumentals.
General
Steve has been a guitar teacher and performer in Armidale for many years. He is a NECOM educator member, director of the New England Guitar Ensemble and has also taught at TAFE. He believes that, as a community, Armidale offers unique and inspiring musical opportunities. It has an uncommon density of musical events for the size of the community's population.
