Research interests

Since coming to the Rural Development Centre in 1985 (from 2000, the Institute for Rural Futures), Richard has undertaken research on a wide range of issues related to rural industries and communities.  These include:
•    economic development studies of rural towns and regions;
•    community impacts of structural changes in the mining and forestry industries;
•    evaluation of the continuing effects of government-funded community development projects in Australian rural communities .
•    impact of the drought on rural towns in NSW;
•    entry to the occupation of farming;
•    sources and impacts of change in Australian rural towns;
•    rural local government revenue and expenditure;
•    attitudes of irrigators to changes in irrigation management;
•    regional development implications of long-distance commuting (fly in/fly out) in the mining industry.
•    value-adding by Australian farmers
•    use of e-commerce by rural non-farm businesses
•    commercial potential of native species on Australian farms
Prior to 1985, Richard carried out research in agricultural economics, and in the economics and management of library and information services, at the University of New England, the University of Newcastle-upon Tyne, Queensland University, and Monash University.
