Roy Brown is a clinical and educational psychologist who has carried out research and its application in the field of disabilities. He has worked in clinical practice, and has directed support and intervention programs. Roy has developed programs for children and adults with reading difficulties, having set up clinics in Bristol, UK. He has designed and implemented long-term community and social rehabilitation programs. He has many years experience designing and developing research and professional education and university programs in the UK, Canada and Australia. For many years he was the director of the Vocational and Rehabilitation Research Institute in Calgary. He has held the position of Head of Educational Psychology, University of Calgary and Dean of Special Education and Disability Studies at Flinders University. Currently he is Professor Emeritus at both these Universities.
In addition, Roy has adjunct appointments at several other universities including University of New England, Australia and the University of Victoria, Canada. His research and practice have resulted in a wide range of books, chapters and articles. In recent years his major publications have been on quality of life and family quality of life across the lifespan, areas in which he is recognized internationally as a founding member. He believes in the application of quality of life at the cutting edge of practice involving people with developmental and allied disabilities, their families, and frontline professionals amongst others. He has chaired a range of agency boards and government scientific and review committees. He chaired The Calgary Regional Mental Health Council and also the Welfare Research Grants Committee, Government of Canada. He has co-chaired the Quality of life Special Interest Research Group of the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual disability (IASSID). These international aspects of disabilities resulted in taking on the founding directorship of the IASSID Academy that provides workshops in various countries, most recently in China, Russia, Mexico and Canada.
Roy is also on the Board of several international journals. He consults to a variety of organizations particularly in Australia, Canada, and Europe. He has been awarded the Order of the University of Calgary for his services to “the University and Canada, nationally and internationally”. More recently he received the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Gent for scientific contributions to Disability Studies.
