I am a Professor of Ecosystem Management at UNE where I teach sustainable land management, ecosystem rehabilitation and sustaining our rural environments. From time to time, I also teach national park and wilderness management, agroforestry, and ecology.

I supervise many higher degree research students (mainly PhDs) and 4th-year project students in a broad range of ecosystem management, natural resource, sustainable farming, protected area and biodiversity projects.

My current research interests include the nature, value and assessment of ecosystem services; invasive native scrub, soil function, erosion and management; sustainable farming and grazing systems; the role and management of biodiversity in production landscapes; tree-grass interactions; fire and protected area management; vegetation and wildlife ecology and management; and environmental dispute resolution. Part of my time is committed to the Australian Cotton Cooperative Research Centre and the CRC for Spatial Information.

I am particularly interested in how governments, public and private organisations and the community can work together to further integrated balanced resource management and planning at local and regional scales.
