I teach from the belief that learning occurs in places which are dynamic and social. It is critical that I facilitate engagement in a safe learning community that provides opportunities for students to appreciate and build upon their prior experience, knowledge and questions; to make connections between theory and practice; to extend their thinking and construct new understandings.

Online teaching and learning at UNE has required me to attend closely to my teaching and learning strategies and approaches so as to remain true to my philosophy, and to continually open up possibilities for students to be more critically reflective and sharing; to continue to encourage students to ask new questions, challenge old beliefs, and deepen their understanding of learners, pedagogy and themselves as teachers and learners.

I strive to create communities of dialogue as a facilitator and guide who presents learning opportunities which encourage individual and group exploration. It is my plan to continue to clarify and elaborate upon my own understandings about effective learning experiences for students and to continue to explore my own professional and personal self. What is important in my work is the systematic exploration of ways in which I can truly adopt a teacher/scholar model in which my research informs my teaching and vice versa.

Research interests

My research interests include inquiring within early childhood communities focused on reconceptualization and deconstructing ‘quality’, children’s active and authentic participation in research, space and place, enacting teacher education pedagogy, and alternative approaches to education.
