Michelle Lim obtained a double-degree in Science and Law with first-class honours from the University of New England in 2008. Michelle has had a long-term interest in International Environmental Law, Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Development. Her honours thesis questioned the adequacy of international obligations for biodiversity conservation in international law and she majored in Ecosystem and Natural Resource Management under the Science component of her degree.
In 2009 Michelle joined the Australian Centre for Agriculture and Law as a PhD Candidate. Michelle's PhD focuses on transboundary legal and institutional requirements for achieving Sustainable Development and biodiversity conservation in mountain areas. Michelle's research is linked to a United Nations transboundary project in the Pamir mountains between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. Michelle was in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan from June to August 2009 visiting project sites and meeting with project stakeholders and experts to discuss the issues and challenges related to achieving sustainable land management in the region.
Michelle's other experience relating to sustainability and biodiversity in mountain areas was gained in Tanzania. This includes managing the Jane Goodall Institute's Mt. Kilimanjaro Community-Based Environmental Project in 2007 and assisting in Rapid Biodiversity Assessments in the Nguru South Mountain Forests of the Eastern-Arc Biodiversity Hotspot in 2006 while completing a diploma in Expedition Management.
