Born in Palermo (Italy), he completed his studies in Palermo and Venice. He holds an MA from the Università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia, where he defended a thesis on the teaching of poetry in the language classroom, and a Doctorate (“Laurea”) from the Università di Palermo. His dissertation analysed the correspondence between Italo Svevo and James Joyce.
He started teaching English in Italian High Schools in 1981 while collaborating with the Università di Palermo for many years. In 1998 he was appointed by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to teach as Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Houston, where he remained until 2004. In the same period he acted as the Cultural Advisor to the Consul General of Italy in Houston.
Research interests
His interests range from Renaissance and contemporary English poetry to Italian contemporary literature, the translation of poetry, opera and literature, applied linguistics, and language teaching methodology.
He is the author of two books: La didattica della poesia nella classe di lingua, Lecce, Manni, 2007, and Valerio Magrelli. Poesia come ricognizione, Ravenna, Longo, 2004. He has also contributed a book chapter on Shakespeare and Verdi, and numerous articles for renowned journals and publishers.
