My general interest in Biomedical Sciences began with my BSc (Hons) in 2003 and PhD (2005) degrees at the University of New England. This interest was further developed during my postdoctoral fellowship at CSIRO. My independent academic career commenced in 2009 at the University of New England. My research has included multi-colour flow cytometric analysis of differential leukocyte heat shock protein 70 (hsp70) expression. This work highlighted that leukocyte hsp70 expression is intricately associated with immune function and is altered A) in response to viral infection, B) as a result of herbal supplementation with Echinacea and C) in response to immunological changes that occur during the menstrual cycle and with oral contraceptive use. The experimental work conducted to date has provided evidence of a number of different factors that modulate hsp70 expression in human leukocytes.

Research interests

My five main areas of current research investigation are:

  • Immunological and stress responses in health and disease
  • Immunological responses to herbal medications
  • Bi-directional communication between the HPA axis & immune system
  • Oxidative stress and antioxidant status
  • Long-term non-progression in HIV-disease
