Following her period as inaugural Dean of Graduate Studies (2005-2009) and her retirement in February 2010, Kay Harman was appointed as an Adjunct Professor in the School of Business, Economics and Public Policy. Kay continues to supervise higher degree research students and engage in research and consultancy work, is a member of one of the School’s research centres, the Centre for Higher Education Management and Policy - CHEMP, and is the Co-ordinator of the Australian Network for Higher Education Policy Research (ANHEPR). Research interests
Higher education and research policy, academic culture and work, researcher-industry links, technology and knowledge transfer, research training, and doctoral education, the professional development of university managers and new researchers, public sector management and leadership, and research methods in education and management.
Consultancies
Professor Harman has worked as an international consultant in a number of roles. These include:
• 2009-10, World Bank: International Expert on the project, Integration of Research and Teaching in the Second Higher Education Project for Vietnam, Capacity Building for Policy Development.
• 2009, Asian Development Bank: International Personnel, Recruitment and Management Specialist on the project, Preparing the Higher Education Sector Development Project: Developing New Model Universities in Vietnam.
• 2008-10, The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf): Invited International Scholar to work on the panel of, The PhD Study: An evidence-based study on how to meet the demands for high-level skills in an emerging economy. The project was commissioned by the South African National Research Foundation, the Department of Science and Technology, the Council on Higher Education and the Department of Education of South Africa.
• The World Bank-sponsored Consultancy as the Research Evaluation Specialist working on the Second Higher Education Project (Preparation) in Vietnam. The work included designing the application and evaluation phases of the new teaching and research grants offered by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET).
• The South African University Vice-Chancellors’ Association (SAUVCA), working on the project, The Changing Educational Landscape in South Africa: Restructuring and Mergers in Higher Education, with Professor Grant Harman.
• The International Development Program of Australian Universities and Colleges (IDP) on Strategic Planning at The University Of Papua New Guinea, with Professor Grant Harman.
• The Papua New Guinea Commission for Higher Education, Higher Education Project on Institutional Planning, sponsored by the Asian Development Bank, with Professor Grant Harman.
• IDP Education Australia project on Academic And Organisational Restructuring at the University of Papua New Guinea, with Professor Grant Harman.

Supervision of Research Students
Kay has achieved a throughput of over 40 graduated research students to date at UNE, at bachelors (hons), masters (hons and dissertation) and doctoral (PhD and EdD) levels. She is dedicated to helping students produce high quality research and successful and timely outcomes.
