Areas of Teaching

Previous positions

Senior Lecturer, Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, University of New England, 1972 - 1981

Lecturer, Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, University of New England, 1967 - 1971.

Silvicultural Officer, Forest Research Institute, Commonwealth Scientific and Research Organisation, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, 1965 - 1967.

Study leave positions

1982 School of Renewable Natural Resources, The University of Arizona. To teach courses in recreation economics, and resource policy analysis.

1977 I was invited back to the School of Forestry and Environmental studies, Yale University, to teach a course jointly with Professor A C Worrell.

1972 School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, Yale University, to teach a course jointly with Professor A C Worrell.

1971 Department of Agricultural Economics, Oregon State University, to undertake research into valuation of unpriced benefits and costs.

Present teaching responsibilities

I co-ordinate the resource economics stream of courses. A summary of student assessments of my abilities as a teacher is contained in Appendix 1. It indicates that I am rated very well, and much above the University average, in a range of courses and teaching situations.

Research interests

My research has concentrated in the application of economics to resolve problems of the use of natural resources and the environment, in particular:
(a) valuation of benefits and costs
(b) economics of sustainable environmental use, and
(c) benefit-cost analysis of alternative uses of natural resources.
I have raised some $1.3m to support this research. The list of books and journal articles suggests major contributions in the areas of valuation of unpriced benefits and costs, and the operation of the land market.

Consultancy

Recent major consultancies include:

-consultant to the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan on course development and rural policy research, January to April, 1997.

- advisor to State Forests New South Wales on preparation of benefit-cost analyses for forestry, 1993-1994,

-preparation of handbook for evaluation of the environment, Department of Environment Sport and Territories, and Department of Finance, and Resource Assessment Commission, 1992-1994, and

-assessment of the recreation value of the Ovens and King Rivers in northeastern Victoria, Office of Water Resources of Victoria, 1987-1991.

Editorial Boards

Member of the editorial board of Australian Journal of Environmental Management, and I am regularly asked to referee papers for the following journals

-Land Economics

-Australian Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics

-Australian Forestry
