I completed my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at the University of Queensland in Brisbane. As part of my Ph.D. I spent a year in Europe, based primarily at Karl-Franzens Universität, Austria. For my doctoral thesis, I researched the writing of three writers who lived and wrote in the German Democratic Republic.
In 1999 I was offered a position as Associate Lecturer in German at the University of New England and from 2001-2004 I held a position at the University of Tasmania in Hobart. I was responsible for Beginners’ German and Business German, as well as lecturing about literature, film and culture. In addition to this, I modified Beginners’ German, so that it could be offered as a web-dependent unit on other campuses in Tasmania. In 2003 my thesis was published as a book by Peter Lang. It is entitled Realism and Reality in Helga Schubert, Helga Königsdorf and Monika Maron.
In 2005 I returned to the University of New England, where I am developed the on-line components for the German course, to enhance the learning experience of off-campus students, and those students based at the University of Newcastle and James Cook University.
I was then appointed as a lecturer in German and I am now convenor of German. I teach intermediate and advanced language and German literature and film. My research interests are in the field of GDR and post-Wende studies and comparative literature and film.
