Research Grants

Over the past 15 years John Pegg has been involved in many large-scale nationally significant projects, many as Team Leader. These projects have been funded by the Australian Research Council; State, Territory and Federal Departments of Education; Catholic Education Dioceses, Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL); Industry and Business, Professional organisations, UNICEF, school clusters, individual schools; and, philanthropic benefactors. Cash and in-kind contributions from these sources have been in excess of $23 million. Selected completed projects include:

  • Federal funded; Issues in Teaching and learning Science, ICT and Mathematics in rural and regional Australia, the SiMERR National Survey.
  • NSW Institute of Teachers funded; The Validation of the NSW Professional Teaching Standards (2005).
  • Federal funded; Maths? Why Not? Project.
  • Federal funded; Partnerships in ICT learning (PICTL) project.
  • Australian Research Council and NSW Department of Education funded; Identifying and analysing processes in NSW public schooling, Years 7–10, producing outstanding outcomes to assist national renewal in junior secondary school education (ÆSOP).
  • Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership funded; the Validation of the Australian Professional Teaching Standards (2010).
  • Australian Research Council and NSW Department of Education funded; The Impact of developmentally-based qualitative assessment practices in English, Mathematics, and Science on school policies, classroom instruction, and teacher knowledge.
  • Australian Research Council funded; Assessing practices: Empowering mathematics and science teachers in rural areas to improve student learning and curriculum implementation.
  • Australian Research Council funded; Enhancing basic academic skills of low-achieving students: The role of automaticity in numeracy, reading and comprehension.
  • Multiple Federal, State and Territory Departments of Education, and Catholic Dioceses grants funding; QuickSmart in Schools: Narrowing the achievement gap for low-achieving middle-school students.
  • Hong Kong Examinations Authority funding; Review of Public Examinations in Hong Kong.

Selected on-going and new projects include:

  • State and Territory QuickSmart in Schools program;
  • Yulgilbar Philanthropic support for QuickSmart in Western Australia
  • State-wide diagnostic testing program in Year 8 science (Essential Secondary Science Assessment – ESSA);
  • Three-year evaluation of the professional learning aspects of the NSW Centre for Excellence Schools;
  • Support and oversight for Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership of the 17 national projects managing implementation of the newly approved National Professional Teaching Standards;
  • Minerals Council of Australia/Skills DMC support for QuickSmart for the Workplace in the Northern Territory;
  • Australian Korean Connection (AKC) where rural primary and secondary schools in Australia run concurrent lessons with schools in South Korea;
  • An algebra intervention program for capable secondary students (SCALE).
