I teach students within Australia and also deliver courses in Hong Kong, Vietnam, and New Zealand.

Part of my teaching responsibilities also include supervision of masters and PhD students.

Research interests

My work falls into two areas:

1: Science, engineering and technology policy

The capacity of national research funding agencies to contribute to economic competitiveness and realise social priorities as well as nurture the science base; the role and efficacy of peer review, particularly best practice grants peer review; measures of research performance; institutional research management; international scientific networks; mobility, recruitment and retention of highly skilled professionals needed to fuel national innovation systems; the importance of diversified competence profiles in maximising job opportunities for early career researchers; social entrepreneurship.

2: Comparative higher education policy

Governance; management; funding; the role of the market and diversity issues; and Commonwealth-State Relationships.

    Invitations to the workshop were issued on behalf of the Planning Committee by Professor Peter Doherty , AC, FAA, FRS, and the winner of the 1996 Nobel Prize for Medicine. Professor Doherty also presented at the Workshop.

  • Invited contribution to the US General Accounting Office regarding its inquiry into the efficacy of peer review processes of US Federal Agencies and ways in which the processes might be improved (2003)
  • Expert testimony to the Standing Committee on Industry, Science, and Technology of the House of Commons, Parliament of Canada regarding Canadian federal granting agencies, peer review funding and the Canadian Research Chairs Program (25 April 2002)
  • Invited expert to OECD Programme on Institutional Management in Higher Education (IMHE) – research management 2000 (Paris), 2001 (Tokyo), 2003 (Bonn)
  • Keynote speaker at invitational symposium on peer review convened by The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research to commemorate the retirement of its Deputy Director General. September 1997.
  • Consultancies for the Australian Research Council (ARC), the Australian Academy of Science and workshops convened with the support of ARC, the Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering and several R&D Corporations.
  • Consultancies for the University of New England including: preparation of the Strategic Plan for the Teaching and Learning Centre 2002; and two major surveys of undergraduate students and academic staff regarding online delivery of teaching units.
