Research interests

Research and publications include the music of West Java, Sumatra, Fiji, New Caledonia and the Cook Islands. Other areas of non-Western performance include, Gamelan, West African drumming, Hawaiian hula chant and dance, and Cook Island music.

Supervision Areas

Primary Areas: Indonesian music, especially West Java, gamelan music of Java, and Sumatran music. Pacific music, especially Fiji, Hawaii, Cook Islands and New Caledonia. African music, especially West Coast percussion/dance ensembles. Multicultural (fusion) bands in Australia.
Secondary Areas: Southeast Asian music systems. Melanesian/Micronesian music. Greek music (folk and popular). Popular music (Western and non-Western).
