I first came to work for the English Language Centre in 1994, so I am the longest serving language instructor at the centre. During that time I have travelled a number of times for lengthy periods to Italy (my second favorite country after Australia) where I have taught English at the British Council and British Institute in Rome. There, I prepared students for Cambridge First Certificate and Cambridge Proficiency Certificate and taught people of all ages, from children to elderly adults both General English (at all levels) and Business English.
Why Italy? Because my husband teaches Italian at UNE and we went there for Study Leave. In fact, I first went there and first taught English when I was 19 years old before I even knew of the existence of Armidale. I have lived in Armidale for 35 years and took Australian citizenship many years ago, but I was born in New Zealand and spent my childhood there.
I did all my degrees in Armidale at UNE and I was an IELTS examiner for about 12 years (another record for ELC). Before I had children, I taught Italian in several schools in Armidale for Co.As.It., an Italian organization.
I have 4 children, all grown up now, and 2 lovely little grandchildren. I love teaching English and try very hard to get the best out of my students. I believe that everyone is good at languages – look at how well we speak our first languages! So, in my opinion, anyone who tries to learn a language, and tries hard, can always succeed.
