Professor Stuhlmiller is a registered nurse who holds a collaborative appointment between the University and Hunter New England Area Health Service, as a Chair in Rural Nursing. She has extensive experience in leading community participation projects most notably, community disaster response, coping with seasonal variation, GP shared care, collaborative education, emergency mental health, computer-assisted self-help, and mental/physical illness detection/response. Most all of these efforts have extended from urban to rural areas or were generated by rural concerns to address issues of access to help. Professor Stuhlmiller has attracted millions of dollars of funding to support research initiatives; many projects have included a practice improvement and evaluation component. Currently, Professor Stuhlmiller is leading development of a student-led clinic at the Coledale Community Centre in West Tamworth New South Wales. The model of care—integrated physical and mental health—is based on the New England 4G Model of Guided Self-health which she co-developed. She is involved in a number of other national and international collaborations concerning online learning and global curriculum development. Professor Stuhlmiller contributes to the University on a wide range of committees and teaches in areas of mental health, community health, and research. She is also an experienced and successful supervisor for Higher degree research students, supervise higher degree students, in her areas of expertise—mental health, disaster and extreme stress.
