I arrived in Australia from Scotland in 1977 (having only just graduated with a BSc from the University of Glasgow) settling in Armidale in 1979. During these two years I worked as far afield as North Queensland and Sydney holding a variety of weird and wonderful positions that had little relevance to my degree!

My career at UNE started in January 1980, in Ecosystem Management, with a temporary position as a Wildlife Technical Officer. This quickly expanded into a number of projects including small mammal monitoring, the mystery of dieback on the New England Tablelands and a number of specialist projects concerned with faecal analysis of a large range of herbivores. During this time I also held a half-time position in Biochemistry/Physiology assisting in the development of an artificial diet for koalas.

In 1989 I was offered a permanent position within Ecosystem Management and since then have been involved in a range of activities and teaching units. I was originally heavily involved in the wildlife area and enjoyed a number of years working with birds including mist-netting and banding. I then moved into the areas of Remote Sensing / GIS and Ecosystem Rehabilitation and now work as a Senior Technical Officer primarily within the Spatial Sciences area. I support a number of units and higher degree research students across two schools; Environmental and Rural Science and also Behavioural, Cognitive and Social Sciences. Learning goes on forever.
