Introduction

I am a Professor in Ecosystem Management and teach Conservation Biology,
Impact Assessment and Conservation Genetics.  I joined the Department in
1994.

Research interests

Current Research Interests:

I unravel how species perform within their ecosystems particularly in regard to reproductive functions.

I use a variety of techniques (e.g. pollination experiments in the field and glasshouse, seed bank analyses, seed viability testing, allozyme electrophoresis) to work out why some species are in decline and how this may be arrested.

Northern NSW is a terrific location for this kind of work as it is a hot-spot for endangered flora with some 380 local species listed nationally as being threatened. I and many of my students have applied our expertise in plant reproductive ecology for the rehabilitation of such species and I feel that this is probably some of the most exciting work that we can ever be involved with. We are currently studying some twelve species which vary in their case histories and management needs. I see our studies in this area as being a litmus test for our skills as plant ecologists - can we recover an endangered species? - and to date we have several success stories.

I am also interested in the impacts of introduced honeybees on plant and native bee fitness. My work on comparative impacts of native bee and introduced honeybee foraging on plant fitness challenges many accepted ideas regarding plant reproduction and pollinator behaviour and is contributing to changes in accepted theory. A major outcome from my work is that I have demonstrated for the first time in Australia that honeybees are indeed detrimental to seed output and native bee behaviour. This work could alter the way we manage apiaries in conservation areas and UNE has been in the spotlight with my management recommendations.

Accurate taxonomic information is fundamental to biodiversity conservation and I also have a long-standing interest in the systematics of the Australian Flora. I am particularly interested in the Euphorbiaceae, Proteaceae and Sesbania (Fabaceae).
