After completing my M.A. in Auckland, I went to Rome on a New Zealand government scholarship for Ph.D. studies. I completed an Italian equivalent to this degree at the Universita "La Sapienza" in Rome with a thesis on the plays of the Renaissance writer Ludovico Ariosto under Professor Natalino Sapegno in 1974. At the beginning of the following year I came to Armidale and have taught at the University of New England ever since. I have taught Italian language and a variety of periods of Italian literature from the Middle Ages to the present day. In January 2004 I was given the decoration of Grand Officer of the Order of the Star by the Italian Government for services to Italy.

Research interests

I have published widely in Italian literature, on Dante's Divine Comedy, the Nineteenth century novel and the twentieth century writer Tomasi di Lampedusa as well as Renaissance theatre. More recently I have carried out research on contemporary Italian poetry and the Italian detective novel.
